ok but here’s the thing about snape
it wouldn’t take much to make him actually likeable and redeemable, to me? it just takes two core shifts - have him be less blindly fixated on lily, and less needlessly cruel to students
take the “snape was trying to save me?” scene from philosopher’s stone and extend it over the whole series. you can still have him be irrational and favour slytherin (mcgonagall’s just as biased towards gryffindor) just take out the bullying of neville and hermione. show him in later books grappling with his dislike of harry as a survivor of the day that left lily dead and a genuine desire to actually protect him as lily’s legacy, as well as trying to keep his cover with the death eaters without backsliding to doing things that are morally reprehensible. have him regret most of the bad stuff he’s done - have his last moments be less focused on ‘seeing lily’s eyes again’ or whatever and more apologising to harry for his failings. have the narrative discuss him in the same way it did dumbledore, leaving it ultimately up to the reader to decide what they think of him.
rather than what the narrative ended up giving us, which is ‘he loved lily ergo everything he did is fine’
